Weymouth businesses named as AI's top tourism picks in new local study

A Weymouth digital marketing agency has published research revealing how AI tools are influencing tourism decisions in the town, and which local businesses are benefiting most.

Digital Flourish Dorset tested 12 tourism-related questions across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in June 2026, covering attractions, accommodation and restaurants. The study scored local businesses based on how prominently they appeared in the AI recommendations for each question, identifying more than 50 Weymouth businesses across the 12 questions.

Among the standout results, a hidden Civil War cannonball was named Weymouth’s top hidden gem. The Black Dog was the leading live-music pub, while Moonfleet Manor was the clear choice for dog-friendly stays. Gloucester House came out top in two of the accommodation questions, being named best guesthouse/B&B and best for unique stays. Nautico Lounge led the vegan and vegetarian category, The Ship Inn dominated Sunday lunch, and Fish ‘n’ Fritz was the unanimous choice for fish and chips.

The study also found that focusing on a specific niche can be good for AI visibility. Businesses that clearly led a particular category, whether dog-friendly dining, vegan food or a distinctive type of accommodation, appeared at the top of AI results ahead of bigger, better-known names. Little Dishes Tapas Bar, which opened in 2023, appeared as a runner-up for best restaurant, ahead of businesses that have been on the Weymouth dining scene for considerably longer.

Two of the winning businesses have welcomed the recognition. Lyn Mackenzie of The Black Dog said: "We're incredibly proud that The Black Dog has been recognised as a top recommendation for live music. We've worked hard to create a welcoming venue that supports local musicians and offers something special for both residents and visitors, so it's wonderful to see that reflected by AI and hopefully helping even more people discover us."

Jonathan Oldroyd, Owner/Director of Gloucester House, added: "We're delighted that Gloucester House is being recognised by AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Gemini as a leading recommendation during independent research. It's a reflection of the reputation we've built through delivering consistent, exceptional service, strong client relationships, and outstanding customer feedback. As more people turn to AI to help them make decisions, it's exciting to see Gloucester House recognised among the very best."

AI tools now produce recommendations directly in response to visitor questions, and AI-generated answers increasingly appear at the top of Google search results, ahead of standard listings. Unlike a search results page, which presents multiple options for a visitor to browse, AI typically returns a short, specific list tailored to the question asked.

Sarah Johnstone, founder of Digital Flourish Dorset, said: "A lot of businesses are still treating Google and TripAdvisor as the channels that matter most, and they're still incredibly important. But AI is changing the picture faster than most people realise. If someone asks ChatGPT where the best place to eat is in Weymouth and your restaurant doesn't come up, that's a potential customer you've lost. Most Weymouth businesses don't know whether they’re being recommended or not - that's exactly why we did this research.”
